Celebrating Student Scholarship: The 2025 Edition of The NEHS Triangle

NEHS is proud to release the second volume of its literary journal, the NEHS Triangle, a publication that proudly showcases the outstanding analytical and critical work written by NEHS student members from around the globe.

Much like its namesake shape, symbolizing strength, connection, and balance, the Triangle serves as an example of the Society’s mission: to foster a community of readers, writers, and thinkers dedicated to the study of language and literature. Inspired by Sigma Tau Delta’s long-standing publications, the Rectangle and the Review, the Triangle stands as NEHS’ affirmation of the power of student voices in English studies.

With active chapters in more than 36 countries and territories, NEHS thrives on the diversity of thought and culture among its members. This year’s Triangle captures that spirit perfectly by including essays that move beyond traditional boundaries and embrace a wide range of literary perspectives. The journal demonstrates, through examinations of canonical Western texts to fresh interpretations of global works, how literary analysis can bridge contexts, cultures, and lived experiences.

The students published in this issue embody the intellectual rigor, cultural sensitivity, and genuine passion for uncovering the deeper meanings within literature that NEHS looks for in its student members. Their writing reminds us that analytical thinking is not just confined to classrooms or textbooks: it is a tool for global connection and understanding.

At a time when the humanities are increasingly being questioned, the Triangle makes a statement: English studies remain vital to education and to society at large. Literature continues to shape critical thought, empathy, and cultural awareness, and the dedication of NEHS members ensures that this will continue. So long as NEHS members continue to uplift diverse voices, engage critically with texts, and share their insights with the world, the future of literary study will remain relevant.

Looking Forward to the 2026 Volume

In 2026, the NEHS Triangle will publish creative submissions on the theme of venturing beyond the familiar—an invitation to explore literature, language, culture, and identity through fresh and imaginative lenses. This theme encourages contributors to take risks, cross boundaries, and expand the scope of their literary expression.

Student members are invited to submit original works of short fiction, creative nonfiction, drama, or other forms of literary prose between 1,000 and 2,000 words in total. Poetry submissions should include 3–5 poems, not exceeding 10 pages (or 2,000 words). All work should follow the latest edition of the MLA Handbook, including correct formatting for titles, spacing, and citations (if applicable).

Submissions for the 2026 volume will be accepted from March 23 – April 6, 2026, via NEHS AwardSpring. Find out more on the NEHS website.

National English Honor Society

The National English Honor Society (NEHS), founded and sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, is the only international organization exclusively for secondary students and faculty who, in the field of English, merit special note for past and current accomplishments. Individual secondary schools are invited to petition for a local chapter, through which individuals may be inducted into Society membership. Immediate benefits of affiliation include academic recognition, scholarship and award eligibility, and opportunities for networking with others who share enthusiasm for, and accomplishment in, the language arts.

America’s first honor society was founded in 1776, but high school students didn’t have access to such organizations for another 150 years. Since then, high school honor societies have been developed in leadership, drama, journalism, French, Spanish, mathematics, the sciences, and in various other fields, but not in English. In 2005, National English Honor Society launched and has been growing steadily since, becoming one of the largest academic societies for secondary schools.

As Joyce Carol Oates writes, “This is the time for which we have been waiting.” Or perhaps it was Shakespeare: “Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer . . .” we celebrate English studies through NEHS.

National English Honor Society accepts submissions to our blog, NEHS Museletter, from all membership categories (students, Advisors, and alumni). If you are interested in submitting a blog, please read the Suggested Guidelines on our website. Email any questions and all submissions to: submit@nehsmuseletter.us.
