New NEHS Honor Code

The NEHS Advisory Council is introducing a new Honor Code that all student members and Chapter Advisors must affirm when applying for awards, grants, and scholarships.

The new Honor Code reads:

“As a member of the National English Honor Society, I uphold the motto ‘duty goes with honor.’ I understand that my duty and my honor call me to think with originality, act with integrity, and respect the work of others.

“I affirm that the work I submit reflects my genuine effort, learning, and creativity. When I draw upon external sources, including texts, ideas, peers, or digital tools such as AI, I do so responsibly, transparently, and with the necessary acknowledgment.

“I commit to using resources and technologies as partners in my growth: to inspire ideas, to deepen understanding, and to expand equity of access. In doing so, I ensure that my own voice, perspective, and creativity remain at the center of my work.”

Grounded in the Society’s motto, “duty goes with honor,” the new Honor Code reinforces NEHS’ commitment to academic integrity, originality, and ethical leadership while recognizing the responsible use of evolving technologies, including artificial intelligence.

Rather than banning the use of AI and other digital tools, the Honor Code encourages members to use them responsibly: as resources to inspire their ideas, deepen their understanding, and expand their access to learning. At the same time, students and Chapter Advisors are expected to ensure that the work they submit reflects their own thinking, creativity, and authentic voice.

By affirming the Honor Code, students and Chapter Advisors acknowledge that they will use outside sources, including AI, transparently and appropriately while maintaining the highest standards of honesty and integrity.

As technology continues to shape education in new ways, NEHS remains committed to fostering ethical scholarship and celebrating the originality, creativity, and intellectual growth of its student members and Chapter Advisors.
