John L. Manear Outstanding Advisor Award

Bestowed annually, these awards celebrate Chapter Advisors who go above and beyond, generously contributing their time and talent to cultivate a culture of academic excellence and community engagement among NEHS student members. By fostering a supportive environment that nurtures both personal growth and scholarly achievement, these Chapter Advisors inspire their students to reach new heights in their literary pursuits.

The John L. Manear Advisor Awards not only recognize exemplary Advisors but also highlight their profound impact on shaping the future leaders of tomorrow. Their commitment to promoting a love for literature, language, and service leaves an indelible mark on NEHS chapters and the broader educational community, embodying the essence of John’s enduring legacy.

Awards

The John L. Manear Awards comprise one Outstanding Advisor award of $500 and two smaller awards of $250 each.

Eligiblity

  1. Nominees must be registered NEHS Chapter Advisors at a school with an active chapter.
  2. Nominees must have been a Chapter Advisor for at least three years prior to the year of the award.
  3. Nominees can only win the award once.
  4. Chapter Advisors can be nominated for the award by student members, faculty colleagues, or school/district administrators. Applicants can also self-nominate.

Application Requirements

Nominators must respond to the questions below, outlining the nominee’s skills and talents, in a single PDF (.pdf) document.

  • List five words that describe the nominated Chapter Advisor well. Tell us why.
  • List any NEHS experiences led by the nominated Chapter Advisor that have profoundly affected you, student members, and/or the wider community.
  • What are the personal qualities that make the nominee stand out from other Chapter Advisors?
  • I believe the best thing that the nominee has done as an Chapter Advisor has been:
  • I was most proud of the nominated Chapter Advisor when:
  • The biggest challenge the nominee overcame as a Chapter Advisor has been:

The application process will require nominators to provide the name and email address of a student member and a school administrator who can provide a recommendation letter in support of the nominee.

Please note: the nominator cannot submit a recommendation letter.

Application Process

  1. All submissions must be made via the NEHS AwardSpring platform during the Winter Awards Cycle.
  2. Nominators must complete demographic data questions prior to submitting their documentation.
  3. The nominator must respond to the questions above in full
  4. Nominators must provide the full name and email address of a student member and school administrator who can provide a recommendation letter in support of the nominee.

Evaluation Process

All applications will be evaluated by at least three members of the NEHS evaluation team.

All applications will be evaluated against a rubric containing (but not limited to) the following categories:

  • Leadership and vision
  • Organizational skills
  • Mentorship and support of students and teachers
  • Chapter engagement and participation
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Impact on school and wider community
