Fee Structure
Charter Application Fee
$150—This one-time fee includes an official NEHS Charter, one year of school affiliation, and unlimited free Chapter Advisor memberships, setting the stage for a thriving literary community in your school.
Chapter Annual Affiliation Fee
$65—Renew your school’s affiliation each year with NEHS, ensuring continuous access to all the Society’s benefits, including unlimited free Chapter Advisor memberships to support and guide your students.
One-Time Individual Student Membership Fee
$15—For a single fee, students receive an official membership certificate and gain access to all NEHS student awards, grants, and scholarships throughout their high school career. Additionally, NEHS offers fee reductions for economically disadvantaged students, ensuring NEHS membership is accessible to all.
Student Enrollment and Membership Fee Payment
Student enrollment and membership fee payments are managed through NEHS Connect. Advisors enroll new members by submitting their names, email addresses, and graduation years, followed by a one-time membership fee payment for each student. Once the payment is received and processed, the NEHS Central Office issues an official membership certificate for each new member.
All members must meet the minimum requirements outlined in the NEHS Constitution and pay the membership fee. Fee reductions are available for economically disadvantaged students.
Enrollment activates memberships, granting students eligibility for all NEHS activities and opportunities, including scholarships and awards. Induction, a separate ceremonial process, takes place at individual schools. Students who are not enrolled through NEHS Connect are not considered members.
To remain active, chapters must enroll at least one new member each school year as per the requirements of the NEHS Constitution.

Fee Reductions
A limited number of $5 membership fee reductions are available for students who qualify for free/reduced lunches or are considered economically disadvantaged. Chapter Advisors and student members should first explore local options, such as using chapter funds or conducting fundraisers, to cover membership fees. If local funds are insufficient, Chapter Advisors can apply for a fee reduction for their student(s).
The fee reduction application must be completed before enrolling students in NEHS Connect, as refunds are not possible once dues are received. Upon approval, Chapter Advisors will be notified, and Central Office staff will enroll the students who will pay a reduced fee. Payment for these students must be made by school check or credit/debit card.
Advisors should submit the application to apply for the limited fee reductions available for their members.
Chapter Annual Renewal Fees
Chapter annual renewal fees are required each year to maintain active status and are managed through NEHS Connect. The due date for these fees is based on the anniversary of the chapter’s chartering. Lead Advisors receive renewal fee notifications 60 and 30 days before the due date, and there is a 90-day grace period following the due date.
If fees remain unpaid after the grace period, the chapter becomes inactive, and all student memberships are put on hold, making students ineligible for NEHS benefits. Inactive chapters incur a $20 late fee upon renewal, in addition to the annual renewal fee. Chapters with unpaid fees that go beyond one calendar year are suspended and must pay a $100 reactivation fee.
