Women’s History Month, celebrated each March, provides a wonderful opportunity for students and educators to recognize and honor the contributions of women throughout history. For NEHS chapters, this month can serve as a platform through which to engage in meaningful discussions, literary explorations, and community initiatives that highlight the invaluable impact of women in literature, education, and society.
NEHS chapters can commemorate Women’s History Month in numerous ways that align with the Society’s mission of fostering literacy, scholarship, and service. Encouraging members to read and analyze works by diverse women authors—both classic and contemporary—helps illuminate the struggles, triumphs, and perspectives that have shaped literary and historical landscapes and is one of the most effective approaches to engaging with Women’s History Month. From the poetry of Elizabeth Acevedo and the essays of Ann Patchett to the fiction of Angie Cruz and the activism of Alice Oseman, engaging with texts by diverse women allows students to appreciate the richness of women’s contributions to literature.
Community service initiatives also present an excellent opportunity for NEHS members to embody the values of Women’s History Month. Chapters might engage in the 20 for 20: Social Service Project by organizing book drives featuring works by female authors, partnering with local women’s organizations to provide educational resources, creating mentorship programs that support elementary and middle school girls in their academic and creative pursuits, or stocking their Little Free Library with books by women authors.
By commemorating Women’s History Month, NEHS chapters reaffirm their commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity, respect, and intellectual curiosity. Recognizing the achievements of women in literature and beyond not only enriches students’ understanding of history but also empowers them to advocate for equity and representation in all aspects of society. Through reading, discussion, and action, NEHS students can ensure that the voices of women—past, present, and future—continue to inspire generations to come.
NEHS is celebrating Women’s History Month and the importance of women’s rights with a special commemorative T-shirt and sticker.
