Join the We Are America Project Today

The We Are America Project is a powerful opportunity for NEHS Chapter Advisors to help students explore identity, culture, and community through storytelling. The national project, run by a teacher and her former students, works with teachers and young people across the country to define what it means to be American—and to spark a new national conversation about American identity today led by the next generation.

We believe this is a great opportunity for NEHS Chapter Advisors!

Academic Impact

By guiding students in crafting personal narratives, NEHS Chapter Advisors promote essential skills in writing, reflection, and empathy. Students become more confident communicators and deepen their understanding of themselves and others—key goals of a well-rounded education and key tenets of NEHS membership.

Professional Growth

Participating Chapter Advisors will join a nationwide community of educators committed to equity, civic engagement, and youth empowerment. You’ll gain access to high-quality training, resources, and support in culturally responsive teaching practices. This is not only professionally rewarding but also resume-building, especially for educators interested in leadership, curriculum development, or advocacy.

Economic Support

The We Are America Project selects approximately 20–25 teaching fellows across the country each year. Each fellow is provided with a stipend and receives 100 copies of their students’ book of stories. Here at NEHS, we believe involvement in national programs like the We Are America Project can have multiplying benefits—supporting other grant applications or school funding requests, especially those related to DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives or student engagement programs.

What the Project Looks For

We Are America seeks NEHS Chapter Advisors who are passionate about helping students explore and express their identities through storytelling. Chapter Advisors should be committed to fostering a classroom environment that values authenticity, vulnerability, and respect.
