New Year, New Website: Updated Information for Advisors & Students

The new NEHS website is now live, and we are very happy to share all the exciting updates and enhancements! Our design team has crafted a site that caters to the needs of both students and Chapter Advisors, ensuring that accessing key information has never been easier.

One of the standout features is the revamped homepage, which now prominently displays our Annual Planning Guide. This comprehensive resource outlines key dates and activity ideas month-by-month, helping chapters stay organized and engaged throughout the year. Alongside this, the Calendar of Awards, Grants, and Scholarships is readily accessible, making it simple to stay informed about the many opportunities available through NEHS. Our Chapter Activities Guide also offers a selection of creative ideas to boost chapter involvement and enthusiasm.

We’re excited to announce that our NEHS Museletter blog is now fully integrated into the new website. This means that all the latest news and updates are just a click away. Whether it’s recent announcements or upcoming events, everything you need is now conveniently located on the homepage and the NEHS News and Events feed.

Students have a lot to look forward to with our new programming for 2024-2025. Highlights include the prestigious, internationally-recognized Young Leaders Award, the exciting UK Literary Tour 2025, a variety of Creative Challenges, artwork and bulletin board contests, publication opportunities, and a wonderful new LGBTQIA+ writing award. We are also launching the 20 for 20 social service project, which encourages each NEHS member to contribute 20 hours of service work during the school year, fostering a spirit of community and giving.

Chapter Advisors will find valuable new guides for student enrollment, affiliation fee payments, and AwardSpring, along with an example membership form and bylaws to streamline administrative tasks. We’ve also made available a selection of much-requested resources for teachers dealing with book bans and censorship issues. Key information about traveling with students to our annual convention is coming soon. Our expanded awards and grants now include the new David Wendelin Classroom Library Grants, increased funding for Professional Support Grants, and continued opportunities through the ELA Innovation Award and Smithsonian Summer Institute Scholarships.

We invite you to explore the new website and discover all the improvements designed to enhance your NEHS experience. Please take a few minutes to navigate the site and let us know what you think via email.

National English Honor Society

The National English Honor Society (NEHS), founded and sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, is the only international organization exclusively for secondary students and faculty who, in the field of English, merit special note for past and current accomplishments. Individual secondary schools are invited to petition for a local chapter, through which individuals may be inducted into Society membership. Immediate benefits of affiliation include academic recognition, scholarship and award eligibility, and opportunities for networking with others who share enthusiasm for, and accomplishment in, the language arts.

America’s first honor society was founded in 1776, but high school students didn’t have access to such organizations for another 150 years. Since then, high school honor societies have been developed in leadership, drama, journalism, French, Spanish, mathematics, the sciences, and in various other fields, but not in English. In 2005, National English Honor Society launched and has been growing steadily since, becoming one of the largest academic societies for secondary schools.

As Joyce Carol Oates writes, “This is the time for which we have been waiting.” Or perhaps it was Shakespeare: “Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer . . .” we celebrate English studies through NEHS.

National English Honor Society accepts submissions to our blog, NEHS Museletter, from all membership categories (students, Advisors, and alumni). If you are interested in submitting a blog, please read the Suggested Guidelines on our website. Email any questions and all submissions to: submit@nehsmuseletter.us.
