Summer Professional Development at the Smithsonian

NEHS is excited to partner with the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) to offer Chapter Advisors an exceptional professional learning experience through the Summer Institutes for Teachers: Teaching the Humanities through Art. This immersive opportunity invites educators to explore powerful connections between American art, social studies, history, and English language arts—right in the heart of Washington, DC.

Designed specifically for high school educators, the Summer Institute transforms the way lessons are planned and taught. Participants will discover innovative strategies for using art to spark interdisciplinary thinking, deepen literary analysis, strengthen critical thinking skills, and cultivate students’ visual literacy. This means more dynamic, engaging, and meaningful learning experiences for students in classrooms.

To make this opportunity accessible, NEHS Chapter Advisors are eligible for exclusive $1,500 scholarships to help cover travel and lodging costs. All course registration fees are fully waived for scholarship recipients.

This is a unique chance to learn at one of the world’s leading cultural institutions while connecting with fellow educators who are passionate about the humanities.

Applications are open now, and must be submitted through the SAAM website by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on March 23, 2026. All questions about the application must be addressed to AmericanArtInstitutes@si.edu. Don’t miss the opportunity to reimagine your teaching and inspire your students in entirely new ways.
