The NEHS Triangle: A Journal of Student Critical Writing

NEHS is excited to introduce the NEHS Triangle, the first in what we hope will become a series of student-driven literary journals. The name Triangle was chosen not only to align with other English Honor Society publications, such as the Sigma Tau Delta Rectangle, but also because the triangle symbolizes strength, energy, and the solid foundation of the NEHS community.

This inaugural edition of the Triangle highlights literature’s remarkable ability to cross borders and unite cultures. By including works by authors from outside the United States and beyond the traditional Western canon, we aim to offer a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry that global literature represents. The journal features contributions from NEHS student writers across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America, showcasing the diverse perspectives that literature provides and revealing just how much we can learn from other cultures.

The first volume of the Triangle gives readers new perspectives on popular pieces of world literature, such as Blue (Azul) by Ruben Darió as well as providing insights into less well-known works such as The Dark Child by Camara Leye. In this volume, contemporary authors such as Reyna Grande and Arundhati Roy are joined by historical writers like Sabahattin Ali and Sor Juan Inés de la Cruz. The Triangle provides a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the world beyond high school classroom literature and the traditional Western canon. We hope to continue this theme in future editions.

Congratulations to all the NEHS student writers published in this first edition of the Triangle, and many thanks to their Chapter Advisors for encouraging them to write on such diverse texts and to share their obvious sense of pride in the countries and cultures they represent.

2025 Submission Information

Submissions to the 2025 edition of the Triangle will be open April 7 – 21, 2025. All NEHS student members are eligible to submit high quality pieces of critical and analytical writing of between 1,000 and 2,000 words (excluding notes and works cited) focusing on texts that do not form part of the traditional canon of literature taught in high school classrooms and/or which are written by (or feature) members of often underrepresented communities. National English Honor Society

The National English Honor Society (NEHS), founded and sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, is the only international organization exclusively for secondary students and faculty who, in the field of English, merit special note for past and current accomplishments. Individual secondary schools are invited to petition for a local chapter, through which individuals may be inducted into Society membership. Immediate benefits of affiliation include academic recognition, scholarship and award eligibility, and opportunities for networking with others who share enthusiasm for, and accomplishment in, the language arts.

America’s first honor society was founded in 1776, but high school students didn’t have access to such organizations for another 150 years. Since then, high school honor societies have been developed in leadership, drama, journalism, French, Spanish, mathematics, the sciences, and in various other fields, but not in English. In 2005, National English Honor Society launched and has been growing steadily since, becoming one of the largest academic societies for secondary schools.

As Joyce Carol Oates writes, “This is the time for which we have been waiting.” Or perhaps it was Shakespeare: “Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer . . .” we celebrate English studies through NEHS.
