University Scholarships

NEHS is excited to announce its scholarship opportunity for high school students, drawing inspiration from Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun. This scholarship invites students to reflect on the themes of humanity, technology, and companionship that permeate Ishiguro’s work, encouraging a deep exploration of what it means to be truly alive.

In Klara and the Sun, Ishiguro presents a world where artificial intelligence exists alongside humans, raising profound questions about emotional connections and the essence of life. As readers follow Klara, an artificial friend designed to provide companionship, they are invited to ponder the nature of consciousness and the significance of relationships in an increasingly technological world. The NEHS Scholarship competition challenges students to engage with these themes, fostering critical thinking and creative expression.

The scholarship is open to current high school seniors who demonstrate excellence in English and are committed to the values of NEHS. Applicants will need to exhibit not only their literary prowess in their application but also their engagement with community service, leadership, and a passion for learning in their application.

To apply for the NEHS Scholarship, students must submit their essays by January 13, 2025. Winners will receive a monetary award to support their post-high school education. It is important to note that NEHS scholarships can be applied at any accredited university anywhere in the world and for the study of any subject (not just English and related courses).

Creative Challenge: Monologues

The NEHS Monologue Performance Challenge is an exciting opportunity for student members to demonstrate their creativity and passion for literature through writing and performing an original monologue.

Members are required to delve deeply into the ramifications of the prompt “I need change,” and craft a compelling monologue that reflects their unique interpretation of it. The challenge emphasizes not only creative writing skills but also performance abilities, providing a platform to showcase public speaking and dramatic talents.

Students will record and submit their performances for evaluation, with entries judged on creativity, relevance to the prompt, and the quality of both writing and delivery. Winning submissions are recognized internationally, with recipients earning awards and opportunities to be celebrated within the NEHS community.

The Monologue Performance Challenge is a chance to refine your storytelling abilities and gain recognition for your artistic talent. Submissions are open until 11:59 p.m. (CT) on January 13, 2025.
