Looking ahead to the 2026–2027 school year, NEHS students will engage with the following texts through the NEHS Common Reader and Scholarship program and the Convention Presentation Award. Please encourage interested students to read these during the summer break.
NEHS Common Reader Texts
- Dashka Slater, Accountable (Fall Scholarship applications and webinar)
- Kristin Hannah, The Nightingale (Winter Scholarship applications and webinar)
Students may submit to one or both submission cycles; if both, the higher-scoring essay will be considered for a scholarship. Each submission requires a written response to a prompt (released on the NEHS website) and a short reflective video on a meaningful text and the impact of NEHS.
Find out more about the Common Reader texts.
Convention Presentation Award Texts
- Angie Cruz, Dominicana
- Jane Austen, Mansfield Park
Students work in pairs, with one submission per school made by the Chapter Advisor. Each pair submits two original abstracts (300–350 words each), one per text, outlining their planned analysis of elements such as context, setting, characters, plot, literary devices, and/or themes.
