NEHS is proud to work with the Shakespeare & Social Justice project and to be able to offer opportunities including access to curriculum resources, ways for Chapter Advisors to “test drive” new activities and curricular resources, and invitations to participate in professional development events.
The Shakespeare & Social Justice project provides support to teachers looking to teach Shakespeare through the lens of social justice with lessons combining English language arts, theater arts, and the Learning for Justice framework. The program was inspired by the Will Power to Youth program, developed at the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles, which brings together arts learning, literacy skills, educational resilience strategies, interpersonal communication skills, and performance techniques with workforce development activities that benefit youth both in and out of school.
The Shakespeare & Social Justice project is finishing year 3 of a 5-year project funded by the US Department of Education Assistance in Arts Education Fund.

Curriculum Resources Available
The Shakespeare & Social Justice project has made curriculum resources available to NEHS Chapter Advisors teaching Shakespeare’s Sonnets and Romeo and Juliet. Julius Caesar resources are coming soon!
Opportunities for NEHS Chapter Advisors
All Shakespeare & Social Justice resources are tested by young people and educators as they are developed. NEHS Chapter Advisors from around the globe can participate in developing new curricular resources by joining the online Teacher Inquiry Group (meets monthly and pays a stipend to selected participants) and the development of new asynchronous online learning modules (stipends are also available to selected participants).
Interested in joining the Teacher Inquiry Group or testing online learning modules? Email Marina at Shakespeare & Social Justice with your request.
Participate in Shakespeare & Social Justice Professional Development Events
A variety of teacher professional development events are available to NEHS Chapter Advisors, either in-person, hybrid, or fully online. 80-minute, 3-hour, and full-day programs are available. All participants receive a certificate of completion.
Recent offerings have included “Unleash Your Voice: Empowerment with Sonnet 23,” “Discovering Social Justice & Next Generation Science Standards in Romeo and Juliet,” and “Illuminating Youth Voice (Romeo and Juliet).”
