Cruz, the 2025–2026 NEHS Common Reader author and recipient of the Latino Book Award/The Isabel Allende Most Inspirational Book Award, will share insights into her celebrated novel How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water.
A powerful and timely story, How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water explores resilience, voice, and the act of reinvention in the face of challenge. During this event, Cruz will discuss the novel’s unique structure, the art of creating unforgettable characters, and the ways storytelling can serve as social witness.
Cruz’s literary achievements are both wide-ranging and deeply impactful. How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water was named a finalist for the 2024 Neustadt International Prize for Literature, as well as one of The New York Times 100 Notable Books and The Washington Post 50 Notable Works of Fiction. Her previous novel, Dominicana, was the inaugural pick for the GMA Book Club, a finalist for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, and winner of the ALA/YALSA Alex Award. She is also the author of Soledad and Let It Rain Coffee. Her contributions to literature have been recognized with the 2025 USA Fellowship, the Poets & Writers/Writers for Writers Award, and the John Dos Passos Prize for Literature.
