Bringing Shakespeare to Life: Two Folger Intensives for NEHS Chapter Advisors

The Folger Shakespeare Library is offering two immersive Teacher Weekend Intensives this spring that are ideal for NEHS Chapter Advisors looking to deepen their practice with Shakespeare and bring fresh, engaging strategies back to their classrooms. Both events take place in Washington, DC and are open to high school teachers from across the United States—no prior Shakespeare specialization required.

All the Folger’s a Classroom: Teacher Weekend Intensive on Shakespeare’s Comedies—March 13 & 14

This two-day intensive invites teachers to explore Shakespeare’s comedies through the Folger Method, a hands-on, learner-centered approach that moves from language to performance to reflection. Over the weekend, participants will dive into works like As You Like It, Twelfth Night, and Much Ado About Nothing, discovering practical ways to help students experience humor, transformation, and empathy through Shakespeare’s playful texts.

Educators will engage in workshops and performance activities, connect with primary sources from the Folger’s world-class Shakespeare collection, and leave with ready-to-use lessons and essential practices for Monday morning. Each participant also receives a Folger Shakespeare Edition of As You Like It, a Guide to Teaching Shakespeare, and a ticket to As You Like It at the Folger Theatre.

Teacher Weekend Intensive: Exploring the New Folger Guides to Teaching Shakespeare

For educators interested in updated classroom resources, this weekend focuses on the new Folger Guides to Teaching Shakespeare—the first major revision in twenty years. These guides cover frequently taught plays including Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with new essays and instructional strategies that support English Language Learners and students with differentiated learning needs.

Participants will engage with these new guides through interactive workshops grounded in the Folger Method. The intensive emphasizes practical approaches that make Shakespeare accessible and dynamic for diverse learners and helps teachers plan sequences and activities that align with their standards and classroom goals. Attendees receive one Folger Guide and one Folger Shakespeare Edition for classroom use.
